Battle Creek / Kalamazoo
Resiliency Project
The year 2016 was marred by tragedy in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek communities. On February 20, 2016, six people were killed and two were critically injured after a shooter opened fire at three different locations in Kalamazoo County.
Less than four months later, five cyclists were killed and four were critically injured when a motorist struck the riders.
With the aim of assisting those impacted by these tragedies, the Battle Creek / Kalamazoo Resiliency Project (“KBCRP”) was initiated. Through its funding from the Crime Victims Services Commission, the KBCRP is a database of healing resources, complete with a victim / survivor navigator to serve the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek communities.
Our Purpose
After incidents of mass violence, victim assistance providers face the daunting task of coordinating effective and timely responses. The Battle Creek / Kalamazoo Resiliency Project is designed to supplement the available resources and services of those responding agencies.

Resources
"Trauma” is a set of normal human responses to stressful and threatening experiences. The year 2016 taught us that communities can collectively experience trauma much like individuals do. But, they can also be a resource for healing. We believe that building trauma-informed communities is essential to resiliency.
Events
Strategies for healing from community trauma include developing community education for individual and collective resilience. We believe that supporting a framework to address and prevent community trauma is essential to the development, health and well-being of our communities.
